Frequently Asked Questions

Broadly, UJ offers two categories of online programmes: short-learning programmes (SLPs) and degree/diploma qualifications. A SLP is a specialised course that targets the learning of knowledge, skills and values in a focused area. SLPs are typically short in duration (a few weeks to a few months, typically not longer than a year) and are ideal for skills enhancement, and professional and personal development. A degree/diploma qualification is a structured and purposeful set of learning experiences, comprising numerous modules/subjects and other learning activities.

UJ's online programmes are open to those who meet the admission requirements for the specific programme they want to enrol in. You can be a full-time student, a working professional, or anyone interested in gaining new skills or knowledge. See the specific admission requirements for the programme you are interested in, on the information page of that online programme (on UJDigital).

Registration for UJ's online programmes is via the UJDigital platform. Simply browse the available programmes, select the one you're interested in, and follow the enrolment instructions.

The duration of online programmes varies: SLPs are shorter in duration (typically a few weeks up to a year), diploma qualifications generally are a year to two years, whilst degree qualifications are three years. On the information page of the online programme you are interested in (on UJDigital), you will find the duration and time commitment required.

UJ's online programmes are delivered in various ways. Some SLPs are self-paced (only asynchronous engagement – this means that participants go through the SLP at their own pace over the allowed period), while others have a combination of synchronous (all participants online at specified times) and asynchronous engagement. UJ's online degree/diploma qualifications are offered with synchronous and asynchronous engagement.

UJ uses the term "scheduled" delivery to describe programmes that are delivered over specified periods.

The cost of the online programmes varies – from free SLPs to paid-for SLPs and paid-for degree/diploma qualifications. Detailed fee information is provided in the programme descriptions.

Yes, participants who successfully complete online programmes will receive a certificate. The free SLPs offer a merit-based digital certificate, whilst the paid-for programmes have merit-based printed certificates that are also available on UJ's digital certificates platform.

UJ's free SLPs are non-credit bearing, meaning that you do not get academic credits for completing them. Some of the paid-for SLPs are credit-bearing, but others are not. The degree/diploma qualifications are credit-bearing. Check the programme description for information on credit eligibility.

Support for participants in UJ's SLPs is provided by the course facilitators. Participants enrolled in UJ's degree/diploma qualifications have access to various support services, including academic and writing advising, technical support, and online access to university resources such as the UJ Library. Once enrolled, these participants will receive detailed information and contact details for the support available.

Participants in UJ's free SLPs can withdraw at any time by simply emailing the SLP coordinator. Withdrawal from paid-for online programmes is more complex. The withdrawal policy, including any deadlines and potential refunds, is outlined in UJ's Academic Regulations (see 5.8).

UJ uses Moodle as its online learning platform. You will automatically be added onto UJ Moodle when you enrol for a course. On UJ Moodle, you will be able to access all of your learning material, complete assessments, and engage with your course mates.

Your course facilitator will also be available through UJ Moodle to support you on your learning journey.

You can log in to UJ Moodle using the same login details as your account on UJDigital at https://lms.uj.ac.za/.

If you need to reset your password, you can do so on the UJDigital portal, and it will automatically update on Moodle as well.
